Definition of Cultural Genocide

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Cultural Genocide: Comes from the word ‘gens’, meaning a clan or community of people related by common descent. The idea of cultural genocide implies the process of undermining, suppressing, and ultimately eliminating, native cultures. In Canada, the term has been used to refer to the government policy of using residential schools to separate native children from connection with their own cultures and languages and to impose European culture upon them.
