Definition of Cultural Imperialism

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Cultural Imperialism: The practice of systematically spreading the influence of one culture over others by means of physical and economic domination. Usually involves an assumption of cultural superiority (ethnocentrism) . In Canada, the term is associated with the concern that the power of United States entertainment and communications media tends to marginalize Canadian stories and Canadian experience and reduce Canadians’ ability to communicate with each other. With the spread of satellite television, cultural imperialism is seen as a global problem.
