Definition of Department by Rand Dyck and Christopher Cochrane (in their book “Canadian Politics: Critical Approaches”) in the context of political science in Canada: A kind of government organization headed by a minister who is politically accountable for its operations and a deputy minister who is in charge of its hierarchical administrative apparatus.

Definition of Department

Department meaning or descrpition: a unit of the executive branch of government over which a minister presides; usually established to administer a specific set of laws and programs relating to a particular subject area, such as health, protection of the environment, government finance, or stimulation of business activity (Source of this concept of Department: emp.ca/books/330-7)
